It Girl: Olivia Joslin

It Girl: Olivia Joslin

My entry into fashion was my bedazzler when I was nine. I bedazzled my clothes, my books, my homework, my walls in my childhood bedroom. Old habits die hard, last month I bedazzled “Miss Kitty” onto the shirt I wore for my college graduation. I also love embroidering and engraving. I frequented the Gohar World pop up shop in Soho all winter and gave all my friends and family personally engraved linen envelopes from them for Christmas that double as passport holders. I recently told my friend Ruby when I moved into my new apartment that I wanted to start living healthier and in order to do that I had to buy embroidered towels and a bathrobe, of course. I like taking something simple and making it special and personalized with a small detail like a rhinestone.

My addictions: shopping, vaping at work, knee high socks, anything bunny shaped, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, miniature things, short shorts, the word kitten, loose leaf tea, baskets lined with linen, Future, strawberry-flavored drinks, Cool Math Games Papa’s Freezeria, bubble gum pink, Mary Janes, falling asleep with my hoop earrings in, Jersey Mike's, french hair combs, applesauce/apple pie filling, cute restaurant bathrooms, rewarding myself, fluffy animals, pink lipstick, glitter eyeshadow, people touching my hair, white cotton underwear, AI cats, pink roses, salami, accessories that don’t make sense but do like a wine apron, violent movies, my belly ring, the puppy emoji, bikinis (I can’t escape LA no matter how hard I try), icing art on cakes, Barneys New York, a good piece of wood, Kim Casali, rose scented anything, wrought iron molding, doing funny ironic nail art, pearls, glassware, orange wine, and asking for the aux in every Uber.

Similarly, the list of things I’m scared of keeps growing too: anything with more than four legs, men in bootcut jeans, getting cancelled for talking too much about alopecia, Alaia mesh flats, climate change, ladybugs, hard alcohol, the sound of hangers dropping on the ground, popcorn lungs, switching from Roku to Apple TV, ferris wheels, and getting my wisdom teeth out.

In another life I think I was meant to be Amish. Or a berry farmer. Or the laugh track in a TV show. Or a jello artist. Or a travel agent. I’m dying to visit this Airbnb in the French countryside. I am chronically obsessed with fonts. Vintage cursive fonts, 70s block fonts, varsity fonts. I am always looking for unique fonts for my posters and moodboards and designs.

I love to sport a uniform, rotating pleated skirts and button ups. My favorite button up is this one from Sandy Liang, I say without bias. My first luxury purchase was black Bape sneakers I bought in high school. I begged my friend to lend me half the money and I paid her back a few weeks later. They are still one of my most worn pairs of sneakers to this day.

I’ve started to notice that I buy things like I’m preparing for an apocalypse. My jam collection is enough to survive at least a year on my own. I have enough canned beans and pasta to fill a pantry. My freezer is packed with soup dumplings and farmers market sausage. I collect snacks that stay unopened in my cupboards. There is candy in every drawer of my apartment. Shelves of picture books for daydreaming during the apocalypse and books with words too.

Freshman year of college I bought Ashley Williams puppy print tights when I first moved to New York. On a trip to Paris a few weeks ago I scooped up her pink dress as a grad gift to myself. My go-to bag is this one by Auto Studio. It's designed by one of my mentors and close friend Sarah Brown. We worked together at Sandy Liang and are both Irish bostonians. The bag fits everything, miraculously. I wear it to work, the airport, nights out.

I’ve snagged some good finds while shopping lately. I managed to find two Lucila Safdie archival pieces through closet sales that were each under $20. I also just bought this skirt by her and am eyeing this turquoise top. I just bought a pair of Raimundo jeans I’ve been pining for all year and they fit so perfectly. I am forever obsessed. These are my version of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, they are magic pants. I wore this insane All In skirt to my graduation and was counting down the days until they dropped their last collection. I am super into Laura Andraschko’s designs and want to buy from her in the future. She makes the greatest short shorts and graphic tees. As I'm writing this I’m convincing my friend Isobel to twin with me and save on shipping.

I’ve been loving flipping through the book collection at Climax Books in the East Village and think their store design is so cute, which was done by the talented Kat Milne. In the West Village, as soon as summer arrives I am a regular at the beloved Bar Pitti, enjoying bolognese pasta and wine outside. Over in Tribeca, I’ve become obsessed with Happier Grocery and love going there on weekends to get lunch and replenish important groceries.

I’m a lingerie girl, my favorites are Coucou Intimates and Only Hearts. I also want and love this bra from Fruity Booty. My mentor and bestie Dean designs for Mad Happy and they make the cutest, comfiest sweat sets. I’m wearing one as I write this. Amy Crookes makes the cutest heels ever, one of the top items on my wishlist. Her shoes look like lacy underwear. I don’t like purchasing from any brand where I feel I can get the item elsewhere or vintage. A pair of shoes like these are unique and well worth the buy. Of the big fashion houses, I look to Miu Miu, Marc Jacobs, and Chanel the most. I love digging through archives for inspiration.

I’m excited to share that I’m in the middle of designing a new collection for my brand 4uonly. I don’t want to give away too much but I will say, expect bubblegum pink, lace, and plenty of bedazzling.
